But starting a travel agency is never a walk in the park. In order to achieve success, there are certain things one has to do. They will require time, effort and money in your end but they are essential if you want to achieve success in the travel business.
1. Start small - a home based travel business can't just open big and expect to attract customers. While that is possible, the easier way to improve is to start small. Work with various established travel agencies in order to learn the ropes of the business instead of blindly starting on your own.
2. Invest in technology - no home based business today can survive without the right technology. Since you're working without too much outside assistance you should have all the technology you need in order to save your customer well.
3. Learn the software - travel agents have to learn one or two travel reservation applications. This is very essential if you want to provide highly accurate data regarding airline, hotel and even care reservations. This will require you to spend money and time as you enroll to learn these programs but they are worth it.
4. Becoming an affiliate as an option - if you think you can't learn the software related to travel reservation, you can still start a home based travel business by becoming an affiliate. Basically you become a reseller of their packages and earn through commissions.
5. A dedicated phone line - many presume that their home phone could become their default business phone. But their phone would eventually be busy that they can't use the phone for personal use. Invest a little bit more for an extra line for your personal and business use.
6. Get updated with travel news - always get the latest news about a specific place anytime of the day. Use the internet to fetch the latest news that will give you idea on which place is safe for travel. It should be part of your responsibility to check this in order to provide a smooth vacation for your customers.
7. Learn basic travel laws and restrictions - never start your business without knowing the documents required to travel outside the country. Knowing these restrictions is highly recommended to avoid inconvenience, frustration and extra cost in your end because of negligence.
8. Read, read, read - always know a city, country or town whenever you can. You have to be very knowledgeable of various places around the world if you want to recommend different travel destinations to your customers. While it's good to be an expert in one place, it's better to provide more options for better customer satisfaction.
9. Participate in conferences - networking is a very important part of your home based business. Participate in various conferences for travel agents in order to know the latest news in the industry. It's also a good way to meet other travel agencies that might help your home based business.
