Teaching music or any musical instrument is one of the good ways to earn during the weekends. For some, teaching how to learn to play musical instruments is a full time job that doesn’t require any employer.

You can teach music at home and be your own boss. But teaching music is not just telling people that you know how to play a certain musical instrument. There are prerequisites that every potential music teacher have to fulfill to ensure that they will have steady students and considerably earn from teaching music.

1. Review the basics – teaching music is not about teaching what you know, it’s basically teaching students the rudiments of music. When you’re teaching music, you have to show to your students the basics. This might be very challenging especially when your skills are advanced since you have to stoop down a little bit.

2. Learn the theory – skills alone will not make you become a good music teacher. While teaching your students the basics of the instrument, slowly practice on a song so that the student will have a motivation to learn. As much as possible, select a song that he or she prefers.

6. Smart time management is a must – teachers of musical instruments are paid by the hour. That means you have to make sure that you are within schedule and you are maximizing the time allotted so that your students will learn as much as possible.

7. Software as additional tools – computers can greatly aid a person in learning music. Recommend some applications for those who are familiar in using computers. The knowledge that can be obtained from the software can greatly complement your lessons.

8. Prepare a lesson plan – you can’t just tell your student that you’re planning to teach him or her until they know how to play. You have to set lesson plans and students have to learn about it at the start of the course. This can give encouragement to the student as the lessons slowly improve their skills.

9. Encourage further studies – if you’re teaching a student who does not have any idea about the musical instrument, it’s important to push your student to additional studies after the course has ended. Your lessons should be treated as a gateway for additional knowledge about the instrument.
