Do you need it?

Even though the concept of “need” and “want” is constantly being discussed, a few people actually remember them when they are shopping or buying things they like. A need is a thing that is essential to you. Most of the needs are only those that protect us from deadly diseases and make us eat well. I have yet to see an iPod becoming an essential for living.

Is that according to your budget?

Although it’s not a need, you can still get away with the product that you want. But ask yourself first: is there enough budget? Every month set a budget for everything and I mean everything. Entertainment and the things you want should have their budget. That way, even if you spend your money on something not necessary, you have already set aside the money for the things you need.

Does it pose an ROI?

ROI means the return on investment. Any businessmen that you will talk about purchases will always remind you that these things are only worth purchasing if it will help you in your productivity. That idea is also applicable in your personal finances. For example, when you buy a brand new laptop, would the return on your investment be quick or will never worth it? For personal finance, ROI means your life have been easier since you have brought that product. If the reason of purchasing a laptop is to increase your current productivity that purchase is worth it since you can work better and increase your salary or earnings in the process.

Those questions are actually applicable for personal finance only. If you have a family, your options could even go lower. Aside from asking yourself if you are within the budget and an ROI, you also have to consider your other family members. Sometimes, there are members of your immediate family who needs the allotted money more.

Last but not the least, think about nature, this is nowhere related to saving money or creating a budget out of it, but it is our responsibility to take care of the environment even in small things. You’ll be surprised how many things you should be able to purchase while saving the environment. It is also one way of persuading yourself against buying really expensive products. Electronic gadgets and non-biodegradable materials could be something that we don’t only need but could be devastating to nature.

So before you buy always consider your future spending, your family needs and nature. These are small considerations that you should always think of but these thoughts, when you think deep, will make you think twice of you really need that gadget or particular piece of dress. At first you won’t see the results of thinking yourself out but as time goes by you’ll discover that you really don’t need some of the most expensive things you really desire the most.
