The 4 Nasty Tricks of Retailers

Retailers do not just put up products in their shelves and expect people to buy them no matter what. There are certain techniques retailers use so that you will buy products from them even though you do not need them. Some may be illegal, but actually, they are smart techniques that retailers use so that customers will fill up their cash box more and more.

Trick #1: The Sale

There are retailers who do not want to slash out prices of their products but would like to entice customers by letting them think that they are reducing their products. One technique they would use it to place signs such as “50% off on all items”. Not every customer is familiar with the original prices but since they see that potential savings is there, they will get hooked with that idea and buy the product.

There are those who are honest enough to provide actual savings but in a very confusing way. There are retailers who promise to slash of 10% of the original price and slash another 15% of the sale price. Based on what you see, you might be thinking that you are saving 25% but you are actually saving less than that.

Trick #2: The Better Product

There are retailers who willingly shame other products just to get the more expensive products sold. The thinking of consumers is highly affected by what they see in the shelves. If they see products that are of low quality, they will just walk away from the shelf. However, if they place one good product in the shelf, consumers will be highly inclined to buy good product and ignore the low quality products.

Retailers could reinforce the salability of the product by placing some discounts on the product. When surveys were made, people reacted strongly to good products that were placed along with low quality products. The more inferior products you see, the more likely the consumers will like to buy the good product.

Trick #3: The Sales Pitch

This sales pitch is often taught to salespersons to persuade consumers into buying their products. This type of sales pitch is usually geared for window shoppers who are just there to appreciate what are on sale.

The trick is based on the fact that window shoppers are just there with a frame of mind of buying or not buying that product. However, sales persons are taught not to dwell in that thought. Instead of asking “are looking for something”, sales persons trained to ask “if there is anything you like”. Skipping the “should I buy?” phase and moving directly “which one do you prefer?” phase will get the window shoppers interested in one product. With enough persuasion, the window shopper ends up as a buyer.

Trick #4: The Confuse Them Pitch

There are salespersons who are great in selling because they not only smooth talker the customer but they know which is the right words to use in selling. Words such as “cheap” or “2nd hand” will never come out of the mouth of an experienced sales person. They use the words “affordable” or “pre-owned” sounds more enticing to customers.

There are also salespersons who confuse you with some data to help you choose a product. This is true especially when you are looking to buy an electronic device. The salesperson would usually babble about the technical stuff making you believe that what they have is actually something remarkable. What the sales person has actually done is describe the product and its specs are basically the same with other products.

These are the simple tricks that retailers use to make you buy their product. Be a smart consumer and know what you want to buy before you visit any retailers.
