Economic RecessionExplaining your kids about Recession
Your kids buy things they need in school or in shops. One day they go home sad because the allowance you gave them can no longer buy the items they used to buy and they ask you what happened. Perhaps the only explanation they have received is that prices have gone up. A worse scenario is if you have to reduce their allowance. How would you explain to them the sad situation and what should you advise them?

Recession hits not only business and industries. It also affects families and as such it is felt even by children to a certain degree depending on how their parents are affected. Those kids whose mom or dad or perhaps both of them have been laid off would be greatly affected.
It is the responsibility of parents to explain the situation in such a way that they would be able to understand it without having to be frustrated. Your explanation should encourage them to face the situation and motivate them to move forward despite the changes and adjustments they have to undergo. Parents’ main obligation is to inspire their children to be creative and to develop the spirit of entrepreneurship.
Talk to your children about money, credit, interests, checks, and other related things to finances depending on their age. Don’t be afraid to talk to them about it. Let them ask questions. It is better that they ask you what they want to know about these things. Teenagers would ask more questions and demand more explanations so be ready to answer them.
Be an example to your children on budgeting, frugality and savings. Encourage them to use the cheaper brands by comparing prices. Bring your children to the store and teach them ways on how to how to buy and what to buy. You can even make a list and challenge your children to buy them at the least cost. Challenge them on looking for the best and cheapest buy.
There is no better time to teach your children on the importance of saving than during a recession. Encourage them to save and set a goal for them with regards to their savings. It should be something for which they would be inspired to save. This should set their minds that it is important to save for the future. By your good example, let the children realize that hard times are not so hard when everyone helps. Once they see your struggle, your children would readily do something to be able to help you. Share some work with them and that would make them aware of its value for their own good.
You will have hardworking children if you are hardworking parents. It is very encouraging to see children doing some work to help their family out of a difficult situation. There are so many successful entrepreneurs who say they could never forget their first job for which they earned something and that job has been an inspiration to them. Wouldn’t it be nice if your child needs only a little allowance because he or she is earns an amount for a certain errand?
