Surviving in Food Industry During Recession

 

The food industry could easily be the industry that will most likely survive recession. The reason for this is simple: people need food to survive. However, not everyone in the food industry will be able to survive. Just because everyone needs food any type of food will not be able to survive recession.

Businesses such as restaurants and fast food are never immune to recession. This is especially true when you are just a small business as your cash flow needs to be consistent even at the face of recession.



But saving your business or your job in the food industry is often very challenging. Food business is a mixture of efficient product control and service. Other companies would only have to deal in one of them to survive but the food industry would have to make sure that these are addressed appropriately.



Cutting the Middle Man

One of the most challenging considerations of the food industry is the cost of producing food. The number of middle men or institutions in the food industry could easily cost you in your operations. If you cut down the middle man, you will be able to save hundreds of percentages in operation cost.



A very difficult decision for most companies in cutting down the middle man is on how much they want to spend to do this. You will practically spend thousands or even millions of dollars if you want to cut costs and prevent any middle man from interfering in your production costs.



You need to buy land where you can grow your ingredients, hire farmers and spend a lot more in processing the ingredients to be company specific. This might cost a lot but the long term advantage of cutting the middle man could be easily realized.



For small businesses, this might be a challenging decision but a lot of smaller lands outside the city could be a feasible place for ingredients. It’s also a good way to draw health conscious customers since they know how the ingredients are grown.



Investing in Human Resources

Recession is a very difficult time for the food industry as more and more people are finding it hard to stay in one job as they find some work not enough to keep them afloat. As a business manager or owner, you have to make sure your employees remain loyal. Any inconveniences or grievance in your employees will result into decreasing customer service. As already indicated, the food industry is not just about the product that you sell but also on how you present your product.



That means your employees should be compensated not only according to the law but a little bit more just to make sure that that the employees are content with what they have and will work harder. Everyone knows that recession could easily be a hard moment for everyone so they will most likely understand your difficult situation. But that will not give you an easy excuse to exploit your employees.



Getting Help

Although the government’s assistance is often geared to large companies who have posted billions of dollars in losses, there are still states in the country that offer assistance to small businesses. You should be able to find some assistance in non-government organizations or even find a bank that offer considerable loans for small businesses.

Unfortunately, federal assistance is not really a reality as the assistance is geared towards the consumers. But this should be a good thing in the sense that spending could slightly increase. What you should concentrate though is to cut the middle man on production and help your employees to cope with recession to provide better service.
