Recession Calls for Alternative Jobs

With unemployment rate at its highest for more than 30 years, there is a great possibility that your dream job right is almost out of reach today. If you are a fresh graduate, grabbing that dream job would require more than extra effort.

No matter what you do you will have to deal with the fact that you just do not have the experience and additional education that others would offer to the company. There are still companies who will hire fresh graduates but the positions these positions are usually not what you originally planned to work on.

To avoid further frustration, what you need to have is a “plan b” job. This is highly recommended even before you set out to provide your credentials to companies that have your dream job. You have to face the reality that recession will always affect the job market and because of that, the chances of getting a good job with a six-figure salary are a remote possibility right after college.

Pushing yourself to your dream job could only lead to more frustration as you will experience numerous rejections in your application.

An Alternative Career Path

Considering a career path is not that bad. This might even work to your advantage since that original career plan that you made is too direct and would not work to your advantage in the long run. For example, you wanted to work as a manager for a small business.

Getting hired for that job is great but then getting terminated for that job would mean looking for another managerial position. That would be very difficult during recession. On the other hand, if you had relative experience on other tasks related to small business such as accounting and other back-office work, you will be able to find another job in no time.

Consider your alternative career path as a side trip and a security measure in terms of getting an alternative job in the future. Recession is never a good thing because the industry that will be hit hard next is not known yet. If the industry you are working for is still thriving, there is still a chance that it will be affected and might close down. If you are limited to one position and experience, finding another job would be very difficult.

Simplified Career Choices

The surprising part in “Plan B” jobs is the fact that getting these jobs is very easy and there is a good chance of being hired. For example, entry level jobs by being an office assistant or even working for a small sales company is still possible today.

Everyone else is gunning for a well paying job so competition is more likely fierce in that area. However, small entry level jobs have virtually less competition. All you need to prove is that you have a degree related to the industry so that the company will not have a hard time training you for the task. Your alternative plan will eventually become your preferred route as it will slowly bring your dream job with more experience in the process.
