Parenting TipsVirtues Single Parents should teach their Kids
Being a single parent is hard. Even if you’re a millionaire you still have to live with the fact that you have to be both a mom and a dad to your kids. Aside from grooming your kids to be better when they grow up, single parents still have to think about their monthly payments, daily expenses and once in a while activities so that their kids would have fun.
As a single parent, there are basic virtues or traits that we should teach our kids in order for them to grow up to better citizens and people. Although all virtues are good, there are important virtues that we should teach our kids that are also important for us as single parents.
Independence
Being a single parent means shouldering everything that should be paid at home. Oftentimes, a single parent has to have two or more jobs so that they could make ends meet. That would leave kids to be alone in their homes most of the time. Teach your kids to be independent so that they could think for themselves and learn to cope up and protect themselves even when there are no adults around.
Importance of Money
As we have already indicated, money is very hard to come by and the things that we have to pay monthly forces single parents to have two jobs. Because of that, we have to teach our kids that money is very important. Every penny should be spent only in something important. But kids will be kids so single parents could encourage saving the money for something they like – which is better than actually shelling out additional cash for something they like.
Understanding
Kids have to very patient about so many things so that their home would be peaceful with food on the table everyday. The lack of additional parent, the lack of additional resources and even the lack of people to help them are only some of the struggles that the kids will have to overcome. It is also important for parents to show this type of trait as their kids would probably show emotions which is undesirable. But these are only reactions to the reality of having a single parent.
Dedication
Molding your kid’s future is quite difficult when you have so many things to take care of. Learn or ask your kids what are their interests and help them improve in that field. It could be sports, a certain hobby or arts. Although it might require additional cash, it’s all worth it even if they don’t totally succeed in that field. Being dedicated will teach them discipline which will guide them in any aspect of their life.
These are virtues that we should teach our kids. We are not just giving them lessons that will be beneficial for us but it will also help them in the future. Being a single parent is a challenge but an experience that will teach us so many things especially in dealing with life.
