Typical Traits of Pre-School Kids

Typical Traits of Pre-School Kids and How to Deal with Them :

Preschool children begin to show signs of intellectual and personality development. They are very inquisitive and are fond of asking “why” questions. Because of their initial awareness of their own personality and the complex realities that accompany this realization, preschool children are often very hard to deal with.

They are egoistic; they manifest unsportsmanlike behavior, and could hardly differentiate fantasy and reality. At the same time, they are very creative, sociable, independent, curious and impressionable.

Preschool children often show contrasting behaviors that many parents notice. At times they want to be independent. Other times, they behave like babies. This behavior shows that they are in a transition and parents should expect this. Parents have to learn how to understand how their children feel. They must also try to interpret the nonverbal behavior of their children so as to know what remedies are appropriate to this type of behavior.

Parents usually find it hard to communicate with their preschool children. They must keep in mind that their children have a limited vocabulary so they must talk to them in their own level. Eye contact and posture are very important in talking to these children. Eye contact makes them feel important and secure while kneeling down when talking to them takes away your imposing or intimidating image. Your voice and facial expression is also keenly observed by your children. You must have a calm voice and smiling face.

Anger and tantrums are also common in preschool children. Let them talk about their anger frustrations and bad feelings. Let them see that you understand how they feel and let them talk away the pain and frustration. Ask questions in order to discover clues on how to diminish the ill-feelings.

Preschoolers are often unmindful of what we tell them. This is simply a manifestation that they haven’t developed the listening and thinking skills at this stage. As parents you should never give threats but offer choices. You should stop imposing your will upon them but rather show patience and understanding.

There are children who develop fast but certainly, there are also children who develop slowly. Parents should always keep in mind this important fact. They should never expect their children to develop in the same way as other children.

Preschoolers also have peculiar eating habits and food choices. Since the right food and nutrition are very important to your children especially during this age, parents should be very tactful and creative. Children like to eat the food they themselves have prepared. Let them help you and offer them choices. Regular mealtime should be observed. Give your children multivitamins so you need not worry about their nutrition.

Give your child specific praise and encouragement. Focus on his or her positive achievements. Don’t worry about the small details they often neglect but remind them of these constantly. Be consistent about what is good and bad and your consistency will make him learn.

As parents you should always remember that your preschooler is in an exploratory period and may often be hard to deal with. A great amount of patience and understanding is needed for their proper development.
