Parents Coping With Deaf Children

Upon hearing or learning that their kids are physically disabled, parents will feel distraught because parents will feel that something was deprived from them. Specifically for parents of deaf children, the gift of hearing was deprived from their kids. Their kids will never hear anything for the rest of their lives – it is thought as a great disadvantage because so many things are based on sounds and not on sight.

However, this disadvantage will only be highlighted if the parents will continue to live in disbelief that their kids were born deaf. Instead of looking for a solution, they have lingered on the thought that their kids will never live normal lives. While this is true, it is never a valid cause that their kids will never progress. Their kids are born special but instead of thinking about the disadvantage, parents should work in finding a solution so that their kids would live as normal as possible.

For parents of the deaf children it is very important to emphasize on the visual side of everything. Because of this, patience is everything. It is very impossible for kids to adopt really fast. Parents have to work hard so that they could start communicating to their kids. That is why along with their kids, parents have to learn ASL or Adult Sign Language.

It is practically a second language that needs to be learned and it will take years before everyone will be proficient in this language. However, the good thing about adult sign language is that it can be practiced everyday as people learn, bit by bit, and using them in real life. As parents of deaf children, they can easily learn ASL because they can actually use them in real life. Kids on the other hand, will also feel empowered because they develop their communication skills.

Even though kids are deaf, it is important to communicate to them in a silent environment. Kids who are deaf will still have the capacity to hear really faint sounds so it is important that they hear the right sounds. Parents should be able to familiarize their voice to their children. With the little sound that they can hear, it is only through complete silence that the voice of their parents could stand out.

As part of helping them develop through visualization, parents should help their kids read. Through books, they will lean more about the world and the environment about them. Their ability to read will introduce them to great things and even find their calling or a career in one of the books you introduce to them.

Aside from parents, relatives and people who are also close to the family should also learn a thing or two about sign languages. Although they really don’t have to know the entire language, they can easily talk to your kids in a very simple manner. The best thing about it is that your kids will feel more integrated to the community and eventually function as a member and contributing to the community’s development.
