The effects of parents with problems on their kids are undeniably huge and oftentimes destructive. The effect on self-esteem and self image is shattered to pieces because their children are too ashamed as their parents often exhibit behavior that is not parent-like. Instead of caring for their children, parents with problems are too consumed with their situation that anything that will bother them will be dealt with in a bad way. More often than not, the people that will receive this anger are the kids. Unfortunately, this anger could even lead to physical abuse of the children.
Parents with problems are also in the road for self destruction if they do deal with it in the right manner. Alcoholism and drug addition are sometimes used as an excuse for parents so that they would forget about their problem. Even if only one of the parents have a problem, the entire family will be affected. Their better half would have to bear with the situation and as much as possible protect the children from physical abuse while seeking help from different institutions. Many women experience battery and physical abuse by their husbands because of problems.
If the kids are in their early adolescent stage, it is advices to have enough courage to ask their parents about the problem. This way they can start a conversation which will dig the roots of their problem. Most of the time, parents will just scoff at their children but if the kids are sincere enough there is a chance that they will get their answer. The other parent should be there when the kid asks the question for protection.
It is also important to encourage the kids to be honest about their feelings. Bottling anger and sadness will have negative effects on the kids when they grow up. As early as possible, let the kids express their emotions so that it would be addressed. Most of the time, it’s as easy encouraging the kids to open up their emotions regarding their parents. When that happens, all they need is a listening ear and a friend to be with them during those times.
It is also important to remind the kids with problematic parents that they shouldn’t be ashamed of them. In one way or the other, parents are still proud of their kids and love them in many ways. This will greatly help the kids’ self-esteem. Remind them that there are no perfect families and each member of the family should be understood as much as possible.
Lastly, nothing more would calm and ease the kids with problematic parents more than their friends. In any given situation, friends will be there to comfort him or her assuring that everything will be alright and there are still people that care. It could be the lowest point of the life of the kids so he or she needs all the help that they can get.
It is very difficult for kids to grow up with a problematic parents or family. However, he or she should survive the ordeal through honesty, open communication and friends around him or her who are willing to listen and understand.
