Financial TipsMonthly Budgeting Tips
Most of us are currently living in a fixed budget. We rely in our monthly salary for everything: monthly bills, food, mortgages, loans, and entertainment. If we are not careful, we’ll end up paying more than we should. We already know our capacity but there is a big chance that we might overspend especially when we use our credit cards or we encounter something unexpected. We have to properly budget our money and we have to do it constantly and with patience. Most of us can easily start some of the budgeting tricks they know but little has the ability to stick with the plan in their monthly budgeting.
If you want to start to budget your monthly salary, I suggest you WRITE your earnings now. Don’t use a computer since you might slack off easily. Sit down with a pen and paper and write your monthly earnings. Do not write your expected earnings but write what you have just earned last month. Projections are good but you don’t have to count the chicks before the egg hatches.
Once you have determined your monthly earnings, it’s time to write again your monthly bills. Make sure not to leave out any information since this will just defeat the purpose of budgeting. If you want to keep your credit score or you’re aiming to improve it, prioritize your monthly bills first. Paying them on time for a few months will increase your credit rating in no time. Besides, since you have used their services it’s just fair to pay them right?
The rest should be dedicated to food and your daily expenses. Usually this is where over spending comes from. I personally use the concept of averages when it comes to budgeting food. Take note on the most expensive set of meal you have prepared and compare them to the cheapest meal you had. Get the average and use it as your bases to your daily mean consumption. Of course when the total price is a little bit too high, you can always adjust. Remember that it’s above the price of your regular meal. Once you have determined the food consumption, other things can be taken cared of: car fuel, maintenance and even entertainment.
There is one other thing that you have to remember: the intangibles. This is probably the biggest culprit to any monthly budgeting. Out of the blue, you might find yourself spending more than what you have planned.
Personally, I don’t believe in intangibles. Spending out of whim is a sign of the lack of discipline. The problem is not on the intangibles but the problem is within you. You have to convince yourself that there is actually a budget for everything – including entertainment and other things.
Once you have written everything, it’s time to transfer them to online softwares or your personal budgeting tool. Remember that these applications are only good if you use them consistently.
To make sure you have the proper budget for everything, consult an expert. There are financial advisers you can contact online or in your local area. Talk to them at least twice a year. They can take a look at your over-all budgeting practice and would create recommendations on how to improve your practices. Don’t think that you have to visit them like your psychologist. The fee that you will end up paying for financial advice could still be used for other things.
So take control of your monthly spending. As a person with limited resources, you have to plan in advance on how much you will spend and stick to it. That way, you’ll find yourself breathing better on your finances.
