Financial TipsHow to Save on Health Care
There are millions of Americans who have not availed of health care because they have no health insurance. The main reason is that health insurance is expensive. Even the plan by congress to put up a national health care insurance was rejected due to the high cost of the program. Government health programs focus mainly on senior citizens and those with disabilities. Ordinary Americans are on their own to choose the best health care insurance for them and their families.
Yes, health care has become tremendously costly. Statistics have also shown that expenses for health needs outside the coverage of health care such as prescription co-payments, coinsurance and tax deductibles have more than doubled. Despite this unfortunate trend there is no point in setting health care aside. Money spent on health care is always money well-spent. You can still afford health care.
You only have to follow some suggestions which can help you lower the cost of health care
The first step towards lowering your health care expenses is to examine thoroughly the health care option you availed. Don’t rely so much on low premium plans. They cover less medical services and you may end up spending so much for services rendered outside the coverage of the plan. Instead of savings on medical services, you may find out later that you have availed of very little and most of the expenses will come from your pocket. In choosing a plan, the first consideration should be your family.
For instance, if you have small children, it is better to have a plan with lower co-pays and deductibles because although you will have to pay higher premiums you should expect that visits to the doctor would be frequent. On the other hand, if you are single or a young couple, you expect less frequent visits to the doctor so a plan with lower premiums and higher co-pays maybe alright.
Try to find out if your company has Flexible Spending Account. This is deducted from your salary to cover expenses for co-payments and other expenses which may not be covered by your plan. These savings are tax-free. There are so many medical concerns which are not covered by your health care plan and SFA can cover these expenses. Common medical concerns such as hearing tests and eye care are not covered by your health care.
There are however, some points to remember in paying for a Flexible Spending Account. Although it is tax-free SFA is in effect only during the year it was made. Be sure to avail it during the year. Estimate how much you would most probably be spending for medical care during the year. Your employer may extend the period of your SFA for two months.
If you have a high-premium health insurance plan, you can also apply for High Savings Account. This will cover your medical bills and other expenses not covered by your health plan. Premiums are deductible from your earnings and are tax-free even as they accumulate. They can be used for specified medical purposes only. Unauthorized use will be penalized.
You should examine meticulously all your hospital bills. There maybe errors in the billings. There might be duplication and bills for services and extra days or medicines which were not used. See to it also that the reimbursements made by your insurer are correct. There are instances wherein your insurer may deny your claims. Don’t just take it. You have the right to appeal their unfavorable decision and to negotiate for terms which are in your favor.
Your family’s health is your topmost concern in getting the best health insurance you can afford. Health care is a necessity. Although it is costly, there are ways by which you can save.
