Saving energy at home is a must. The rising cost of electricity can easily dent anyone’s budget if they are not careful in saving energy at home. Aside from saving money, it is also important to save energy to help nature.

Many consumers commit small mistakes on pretext of saving energy. Some of these mistakes does not reduce energy consumption, in certain cases they will even increase energy consumption.  Listed below are some of the common mistakes related to electricity saving. Avoid these practices in order to save more on your energy bill:

1. Not using power strips - Switching off your appliances is not enough. Even though the power is completely cut off in your appliance, the fact that it stays plugged means it is still drawing power. Use power strips to prevent any power from being used even though the appliance is plugged.

2. Not Cleaning Air filters - Air filters in our air conditioners can get clogged with dirt. This only increases energy consumption because of extra effort from the machine. But instead of cleaning it only when it’s dirty, provide regular clean-up to your air conditioner to maintain its optimal performance without extra cost.

3. Relying on normal cycle for dishwasher - If you are used to heavy cycle in your dishwasher, the money saving technique will naturally be on normal cycle. But the difference between heavy and normal cycle is too small to provide any real savings or help. Reduce the cycle to drastically save energy.

4. Relying on efficiency instead of installation - This can happen in air conditioners and furnaces. A good air conditioner might be energy efficient but it will never provide the efficiency you seek if they are not properly installed. Seek advice first on which appliance to buy and invest in installation to save energy.

5. Switching off computers - This is only true if you are using your computer in just a few hours a day. But if you are staying in front of a computer for more than eight hours a day, better leave the computer on during breaks. Place it in standby to save energy and prevent damage from your computer.

6. Using Halogen lights - Halogen lights itself is very energy efficient. But the requirement to power the lights requires energy. Transformers for halogen lights require a separate energy.

7. Electricity based heating - The efficiency of fuel based heaters has been questioned because not all fuel is converted to heat. But fuel is a lot better compared to electricity because heat can be better distributed when the heating is fuel based.

8. Cooling the room through ceiling fans - This technique is based on air conditioning. But fans only give wind which does not stay in the room even if the fan is switched off. Only use the fan when you are in the room to avoid unnecessary spending.

9. Hand washing dishes - More water is used when washing dishes compared to dishwasher. The water continues to run while you are washing dishes but not every drop of water is used to clean your dishes.

10. Drastically changing the temperature - You will end up spending too much energy just to get to your desired temperature. If you want to save energy, stay on the ideal temperature. Cranking it up or down will never immediately change the temperature as the appliance will slowly change to your desired temperature.
