Economic EducationHelp Your Children Start Small Business
Your children needs be encouraged to set up a small business if you want to help them become entrepreneurs or just someone who will become sensible with money.
There are a lot of values that children will learn from setting up a small business even for just a short period of time.
Telling them to get out and start a business is often easier said than done. Parents should make sure that their child learn and even earn from their small business so that the project would be a success.
A small business can either be a learning experience. However, if parents fail to show enough support, it can become a bad experience.
Selecting the Right Type of Business
You cannot just go with the typical “Lemonade Stand” as a small business for your kids. There are a lot of things that children could do.
Their business cannot just be based on selling but could also be based on the services your kids could offer in your neighborhood.
To properly select the right type of business, observe the skills and interests of your kids. Each kid has a particular interest that they might show some expertise.
For example, kids today are really good at computers and most of them could stay in front of one for hours. Encourage your kids to earn something by offering their services to others to write or create documents.
As long as the kid is interested in the particular type of business, he will stay in the business for a long period of time.
Preparation and Business Plan
After the right business has been selected, parents should determine with their kids the goals and parameters of the business.
Parents should set parameters for their kids since they might end up being too focused on their small business.
Their time on business should be limited to two - three hours a day even if there is no school. You still have to let your kid be a kid. You still have to encourage them to play and have fun. They might end up losing their social activity in favor of business. Although they might be earning enough for their future, they cannot easily function well with the society.
Children should made to realize that they will never have thousands of dollars in a short span of time. You should set realistic goal with your kids as this will also become their sales target. They will learn for the first time how to properly allocate their budget so that they would reach their target.
A business plan should include the equipments they need, the starting capital and business hours. No matter how long (or short) the list would be, parents just have to make sure their kids realize that everything should be accounted for in a business. That would mean everything has to be counted so that they would know if they have earned a profit after a day’s work.
Please take note that these things might be stressful to your kids. You have to be there as a parent. You might end up doing the inventory so that you can show to your kids your interest in their work. You still have to make sure your kid is still having fun while doing business so that they could stay on it for a long period of time.
Safety and Starting Small
There are two things that you need to ensure so that your kids will not experience stress and will have fun: safety and starting out small.
Danger should never be part of your kids business. Your kid may have a lot of clients but they do not have to deal with clients that may harm them financially or worst, physically or emotionally. You should know each client they would have or have them set up their business near or in your house.
If they plan to work online, be sure to have a list of contacts and never allow them to work late at night. Although they are aware of online safety, you will never know what happens when you are already sleeping and they are already working.
To make things simpler, let your child start small. It will not be much but it will get things done and your kid will now have things to take care of as a business. By being small, you and your kid could monitor everything. As the operation improves, you should also evaluate if the business environment will still be healthy for your kids.
Setting up a small business for children should be a fun and stress free. However, you should also make sure that your child will learn the value of money as well as basic entrepreneurial skills. They may be in the losing end in business sometimes but they will learn a lot and use the experience later as an adult.
