Allowance as a Teaching Tool in Finances

Kids and teens usually rely on allowances for their daily spending. Without it, they will just rely on their lunch bags for food or anything else that parents place on their bags when they are at school.

At home, kids will just have to raid the fridge or ask their parents for money if they want to buy something.

Parents, of course, would sometimes give in to the requests as they want their kids to have something. It is a responsibility for parents to support their kids or at least make them happy through financial support.

But during these tough times, parents cannot just let their kids get everything they want. Financial problems are looming to those who are not able to control their finances.

Like everyone else, parents have to cut back budget in almost everything, including allowances for their kids.

On the other hand, parent cannot just reduce the allowance of their children in an instant. Curious as they are, they will always ask why these things are happening.

Parents should not only explain the situation but could actually use the allowance as a tool in teaching their kids the importance of money and how sound control of the finances could help them in the future.

Easy Accounting for Children

The thought of accounting with children is a little bit difficult. Kids, especially those who are in early elementary are more interested in other things and accounting may not be in their mind.

But parents could easily teach their kids accounting by showing them where money comes from and where money goes. This will make your kids realize, the linear situation of money. That means money do not just go back in an instant.

On the other hand, parents could make the situation more personal for kids wherein they could actually relate to the situation. Help the kids in their accounting by having them write how much they have spent for the day and how much they have left (if any).

It is their simple accounting that will lead them to realize how much they actually spent. You can show them the furniture and other things at home that could be bought if they save something for sometime.

Extra Allowance for Savings

Another way to help kids realize the importance of sound finance management is helping them save. Think of it as a small incentive that you would give to your kids for various reasons.

A good way to help them save is to increase their allowance in exchange for their services. They can do extra chores during the weekends or be assigned with a task in the house.

This will give them the sense of responsibility as well as the idea that money does not come in for free and they have to work for it to earn it.

But instead of giving them the extra allowance to be freely spent, give them the allowance as savings. Help them set up an account in your local bank or you could just purchase a piggy bank that you can keep in a neutral place so that not only you and kids could see it, but everyone will do.

For security purposes, parents might want to keep the piggy bank at night and display them again the next day. Your kids will know that their extra allowance is there and it will slow stack up. The amount would eventually good enough to buy something they want.

Aiming Big

Aside from helping kids to save from extra allowance, it is also a good way to help kids develop sound financial planning when they are encouraged to aim for something.

The money they spent is not just saved for the sake of saving money; the money should be kept as a way to reach a goal.

Kids might like a certain toy, book, movie or electronic gadgets. Instead of giving it to them in an outright manner, parents could help kids buy the desired product but their help should only be limited in saving money for that product.

This will teach kids to be patient and of course, the importance of money and how they should be saved for something better.

Rewards and Punishments

Allowance could be used to reward or punish kids. But parents should go beyond rewards and punishments as they should also teach their kids the importance of money when they are rewarded and punished for something.

For example, a punished kid will have their allowance reduced. Make your kids realize that by reducing their allowance they will never be able to purchase something they need. This should also be the same when you provide rewards.
